If you never previously wanted to drive your Volvo into a quarry, it’s time to think again. The Volvo FMX is unique – it’s a Volvo specially designed for heavy construction duties. A truck that tackles heavy loads with ease, shrugs off poor terrain and steep gradients. Quite simply, it’s a truck that enjoys the rough life.
Volvo’s world-famous driveline is a particularly good friend in demanding terrain. The chassis range is immensely versatile, which among many advantages makes things easier for the bodybuilder. And the cabs are every bit as comfortable and safe as you’d expect from a Volvo.
The Volvo FMX truck has an entirely new front, tailored for the rough-and-tumble of construction operations. Together with features such as 570-litre steel fuel tanks, specially developed rear-view mirrors, new work-lights and a new air intake, the end result is a Volvo FMX that is a true specialist in the quarry – a productive partner that forms the foundation for many years of profitable construction operation.
Safety:
“Safety is, and must always be, the basic principle behind all design,” said Volvo’s founders many decades ago. We have lived according to that motto ever since, and the Volvo FMX is no exception.
All our cabs meet prevailing safety standards – including Swedish cab safety requirements, which are the strictest in the world. The driver environment, both inside and outside the cab, is equipped so the driver can do his job in a safe way without risking his own or anyone else’s safety.
Designed for durability:
In VOLVO FMX Truck safety and quality often go hand in hand. If vital parts wear out, this can have serious consequences. That’s why all the truck’s components are designed to withstand tough use and considerable burden over a long period of time. One positive side-effect is a considerably lower risk of breakdown and unplanned stoppage.

If a serious accident occurs, for instance a collision or roll-over, the cab frame has to be able to absorb the resultant massive forces. All
Volvo FMX cabs have undergone the renowned stringent Swedish crash-safety tests and our own barrier tests that simulate a collision with another truck.
The cab interior is also designed to reduce the effects of a collision. The instrument panel is rounded and has no sharp edges, the steering wheel and pedals collapse if they’re subjected to considerable force, and all the cab accessories are crash-tested to ensure they don’t work loose in a collision. All to protect the driver from injury.
The seatbelt can be attached to the seat instead of the cab wall. This is particularly useful in rugged terrain, where the belt might otherwise jump about and sit incorrectly. The Volvo FMX is also available with an optional airbag.
With ESP (Electronic Stability Program), each wheel is braked individually. Since braking power can quickly be redistributed, the risk of skidding is reduced and braking is both safer and more controlled. ESP is now also available on 4x2 and 6x2 rigids with air-suspended bogie (RAD-A4 or RADT-A8).
Turning right and pulling into the right-hand lane are risky manoeuvres on the road. The blind spot on the passenger side is large enough to hide a car. Lane Changing Support keeps a constant eye over this area with the help of a radar. If there’s anything in the blind spot, the driver is alerted via a lamp by the rear-view mirror.
VOLVO FMX Truck Performance:
Construction operations can be demanding. When you’re hauling a full load in slippery terrain, you must be able to rely on every component doing its job properly. The engine has to provide sufficient torque and the axles must put the power down through the tyres. All so you can do your work as efficiently as possible, without unnecessary stoppages.
However, raw power alone is seldom enough. That’s why the Volvo FMX driveline also features a whole range of intelligent functions. For instance, you’ll find the clever VEB+ engine brake, Hill Start Aid that assists you when the terrain doesn’t, and the intelligent I-Shift transmission that makes it easier for you to manoeuvre smoothly and nimbly.
VOLVO FMX Truck Engine:
Not everyone knows how to read engine graphs. However, those who do are always impressed when they see the graphs for Volvo’s 11- and 13-litre engines. The engine characteristics are truly extraordinary. High torque from low revs – something that really pays off in rugged terrain. And maximum torque that remains on tap across a wide rev range does wonders for the truck’s driving properties.
Massive braking effect
As you know, however, there are as many descents as there are ascents. And they can be as difficult to handle. That’s why we have VEB+, Volvo’s patented engine brake. With its enormous braking effect, it ensures you don’t risk losing control of your truck on steep downhill gradients.
Low fuel consumption – low emissions
The Volvo FMX is available with a choice of two engine sizes in several power outputs. They are all renowned for their high efficiency rating. This translates quickly into particularly low fuel consumption, as well as low exhaust emissions. With SCR technology, the engines meet Euro 5 standards. What’s more, several of the engines are also available in EEV versions, which means even lower particle emissions.
The Volvo FMX comes with a comprehensive range of axle configurations that make it easy to tailor the truck to even the heaviest of haulage jobs. Volvo’s tridem bogie offers enormous stability and a short rear overhang. A driven front axle permits all-wheel drive, in either 4x4 or 6x6 configuration. And for those truly heavy transports, the Volvo FMX can be specified with dual front axles, in which configuration the truck can handle gross vehicle weights of up to 48 tonnes.
